i understand and agree that callout culture is worth condemning, but there is something important to be said about the fact that many people jumping on the bandwagon of criticizing it, are usually known to be awful for some reason (genuine harassment/assault/underage stuff, not “i don’t like how they drew this character” stuff)
this worries me – a movement towards reasonable attitudes shouldn’t be co opted by people wanting protection for their awful behavior, and it needs to be addressed in order to stop the pendulum from swinging too far from hyper vigilance into non vigilance
remember when charlesoberron wanted to create “call in” posts talking abt how great a person is to counter callout posts…after centipeetle called him out on his pedophilic actions and a bunch of other lesbophobic shit he’s done. it’s hilarious how almost any post critiquing callout culture is done by blogs who have been called out for bad things. like how those “ship whatever you want!” posts are made by ppl who ship pedophilic ships or incest or shit like that
yea that’s what i’m talking about. i’m all for taking a balanced approach, but we know by now that some vile ppl are hiding behind the push towards moderation, in order to prop up their own vile actions. which is frankly indefensible. i’m sure there are many reasonable people who would like an end to the cutthroat tumblr shit but in the process of toning it all down, i’m worried it’ll be easier for those nasty people to brush off people speaking out against them
