Don’t use fat as a negative word or thin as a good one.

Don’t engage in pro-diet talk.

Don’t make assumptions about people based on their weight.

Stop assuming fat people are unhealthy.

Don’t hold up “health” as the be all of everything- esp when it means “not fat”.

Stop using the word “obesity”- size is not a disease.

Don’t concern troll fat people.

Acknowledge that fat people get eating disorders too.

Demand an end the bullying of fat kids- which means an end to the fear mongering around “childhood obesity”.

Demand positive fat representation in media.

Don’t tell fat jokes or laugh at them.

Hold your faves responsible for their fatphobia.

Boost the voices of fat activists.

Support fat artists & creators.

Support & defend the fat women who speak out about fatphobia & get attacked ALL the time.

BELIEVE FAT PEOPLE.

There are things EVERYONE can do to move the needle on fatphobia.
You can start doing them NOW.

Don’t use fat as a negative word or thin as a good one.

This bears repeating a lot.

I don’t think people understand that this doesn’t just mean when you talk about other people. But it also means when you talk about yourself.

You may not even consider it fatphobia when you criticize yourself for being fat and get really negative about it.

But guess what?

THAT’S FATPHOBIA.

By talking about weight gain and fat-ness in a negative light, it only further normalizes fatphobia. It doesn’t matter who you’re talking about. It’s still fatphobia.

It’s twice as bad to do this if you’re NOT. ACTUALLY. FAT.

Deal with that shit on your own time in your own space and leave fat people out of it.

Also, a reminder to myself and other fat activists:

Health status is irrelevant in determining who is a “good person”

Health status is irrelevant in determining who deserves respect

Health status is irrelevant in determining who deserves housing, healthcare, and other necessities

The health status of others is not your business

DON’T TRY TO FIGHT FATPHOBIA WITH ABLEISM

This is important

Question: is it wrong to be on a diet?

I don’t think this is even the right question. The original post doesn’t address individual people’s eating habits which are totally variable and for all kinds of different reasons.

Yeah, I have opinions on intentional weight loss, but that’s not what this is about.

This post is about how people can help fight a pretty horrible and sometimes deadly form of discrimination.

Pro-diet talk, promoting intentional weight loss- that hurts fat people and eating disorder survivors, if that matters to you. (Sometimes those people are the same people.)

Lots of people don’t care about that, but you should know- if you talk about dieting, if you talk about fatness as a bad thing- you are hurting people.

It’s up to you to decide if that matters to you.
